While the Imperial Strategy Card (in the base game) is universally reviled among TI3 players (and is improved in Shattered Empire), I don't think it's bad for the first-time player. It basically amounts to '2 players each round make a scripted decision', which is understandably disapproved by experienced players, but isn't the end of the world when you have so many other things to grapple with your first game (you might even welcome the scripted play with so many other things to keep track of).
It also shortens the game length.
Do you mean to not use the Age of Empire option also? That option was included with the base game.

I disagree - I would STRONGLY recommend playing the base game RAW first, no modifications. If you don't like it, that's fine, but then you have a baseline to measure everything else against.
The game is not broken with Imperial. Many people don't LIKE it and the extra points it gives, but it's still a very enjoyable game.

I mean use the base game Imperial, even if just once. I strongly disagree that playing with Imperial RAW will ruin the game for anyone, and it's a good baseline.
I'd probably also recommend against Age of Empire, though because for new players, having all the objectives out at the start can be a bit overwhelming, where if they come out one at a time, it's a bit easier to learn-as-you-go.
