I will be the dissenter - you do NOT need the expansion to make the game enjoyable. I do prefer the new Strategy cards in the expansion, but found the base game perfectly playable and enjoyable as is.I would recommend eventually getting the expansion, but I wouldn't hold off on playing just because of that.
