Thanks Tocoking and company! :)Kevin, your variant is similar to mine, but (please correct me if I'm wrong):
- You make units face a side instead of a vertex. I chose a vertex mainly because the battlefield is quite small! You're true when you say that playing with a player's backline being the short dimension implies a unit would be facing "ahead left" or "ahead right". So the rear of your army would be pointing to a square of the battlefield instead of to a side. Since it's only a change of perspective, that's no problem for me! ;)
- If a unit is adjacent to an enemy and wish to move, it can only retreat. That makes sense most of the times (I had thought about it), but if a unit has an enemy adjacent to its right rear, it could retreat one hex to attack its previosly flanking enemy! So you would need to add more rules. Since I wanted simplicity, I opted for my variant.
