In addition to all the advice provided here, another good thing to do as the attacker is to split your units into two groups, with different goals, and far apart. Maybe one group you’re trying to exit for VPs. Maybe the other is trying to take key objectives on the map. (Again, everything changes, always, but for the sake of argument, let’s say generally . . .)
Remember, the defender only has four cards and you have six. He may be able to react to both of your groups some of the time, but not all of the time. And when he does react to both, most likely he’ll be clearing his hand out leaving himself few to no cards for his own turn. Your two-card advantage will grind him down over the course of the game.
