The ability to move first is reasonably handy, but their true power comes in the ability to dominate the board. Thanks to the retreat ability they can make some very aggressive/bold moves that can be hard to punish them "appropriately" for.Second to that is the ability to claim objectives first. I find that in a game between skilled opponents, the ability to claim first is a real game-decider.
I find them liberating to play as and frustrating to play against. Though no doubt they can be a hard race to master, and the initiative thing requires a different approach to the game than the other races.
