Core Worlds isn't like EmDo in my opinion. It is a space conquest game (measured in VP) where EmDo is just a VP race game with a space theme. Core Worlds is more a deck building game (you add units that will help you conquer worlds) than EmDo (where you build a deck but with actions that support your strategy). I like both games but I don't find them very similar.

I think teaching RftG depends on the audience. Casual gamers without much of a interest in the theme will probably not respond well (it is my wife's most hated game after one play). You have to be willing to learn the symbology, which while it doesn't take long your first few games will be a lot of "what the heck does this do?"
