On the Death of King Sebastian the Ottomans transported 5,000 Janissaries to besiege the Knights of St John in Malta. Spain built a galley in Messina to counter the Turkish Fleet (!), sponsored Bautista and assaulted Calais with Siege Engineering ; "Well, now... Pedro, Alfonso, and I, wait until nightfall, and then leap OUT OF the rabbit, taking the French by surprise - not only by surprise but totally unarmed!" They were repulsed with the loss of 1,000 mercenaries while the French garrison lost just as many regular troops. England began seeking influence with Portugal as Drake sailed south into the Bay of Biscay. Though he lost a galleon to the French defences (a fortress, galleon and galley in Bordeaux) he sunk the French galleon and increased his fame. The Emperor successfully took Metz and the Protestants revolted in Brielle and Rotterdam, then converted Clermont and Paris with unrest. As the Lynch Mob gathered around Notre Dame and Catherine and I frenched them with boiling oil I wondered if three marriages was worth all this.
The Ottomans probed that their army was just as inept as their navy when they fruitlessly assaulted Malta, taking 1,000 casualties in the process. Rather than sent his fleet to rescue Malta the Spainish launched a Desperate Assault on Calais, losing 3,000 Spanish Regulars in the slaughter, but taking the city. He then sent a special messenger to Henri d'Anjou equiped with the latest Hand Guns. Henri suspected nothing as the cloaked, moustachioed Spaniard presented him with a black globe with a fizzing match, then put his fingers in his ears as he tip-toed rapidly away. "What's this written on the side?" asked Henri, "why it's a 'B-O-M-B'"
