Thread: Puerto Rico:: Variants:: Mashup: Settlers of Puerto Rico

Feel free to playtest this insanity for me. The game is basically Puerto Rico, with a little geography thrown in from Settlers.

Set up the Settlers of Catan board according to the "advanced" setup, but you will not need the number chips.

Set up Puerto Rico as normal, but you will not need the plantation tiles.

Catan settlements take the place of plantations. Starting with the last player and going counterclockwise to the start player, each player places one settlement and one road. Settlers settlement spacing rules must be followed.

The differences from Puerto Rico roles are as follows:

Settler - You may place one road and one settlement OR two roads. If you chose Settler, you may instead upgrade a settlement to a city. Settlers settlement spacing rules must be followed.

Mayor - Place colonists in buildings or settlements or cities. Settlements have space for one colonist, cities for two.

Builder - The only change is that a settlement on a 3:1 harbor counts as a quarry.

Craftsman - Each pair of colonists on a settlement / city and building must produce one good. To produce a good, the colonist on a settlement / city must be on the corner of the appropriate kind of tile:

Corn - Wheat
Indigo - Sheep
Sugar - Ore
Tobacco - Brick
Coffee - Wood

- I tried to match these either thematically and/or by color similarity so it's easier to remember. E.g. sugar is white, ore is gray; coffee is brown but in fact it does grow on a green bush.

A colonist on corn produces a good without being paired with a building. In general you might have a choice of what goods to produce. For example, suppose you have a city with two colonists on the corner of corn, indigo, and tobacco, and a settlement with one colonist on the corner of indigo and coffee. You have a Large Indigo Plant with 2 colonists and a Tobacco Storage with two colonists. You can produce 1 corn, 2 indigo; 1 corn, 1 indigo, 1 tobacco; or 2 indigo, 1 tobacco.

Trader - No change.

Captain - If you have a settlement on a 2:1 harbor, it acts as a Small Wharf for that type of good. I.e., you may ship any number of that type of good on it, and receive 1 point for each 2 goods shipped.

Buildings that relate to plantations need some modifications, mostly obvious:

Hacienda - You may place a free settlement, if you have one in your supply and a legal place to do so.

Construction Hut - You may use the option to upgrade a settlement to a city even if you did not take Settler.

Hospice - When you place a settlement you add a colonist for free. When you upgrade a settlement to a city, you add a colonist for free.

Residence - Count 2x cities + 1x settlements. Worth 4 for a total of 9 or fewer, then 5, 6, 7, 8 for 10, 11, 12, 13.
