Thread: Twilight Imperium (third edition):: General:: What's everyone's thoughts on Mech units?

As in, do you think they add anything to the game?

The only point I saw to them was maybe the designers saw a problem with people being too hard to dislodge when they spammed ground forces on a planet? So they introduce this powerful ground unit that still only takes up 1 capacity so now a single carrier can go on the offensive with a much more powerful invasion force?

But to me, they seem to kind of throw the game off. The main reason is that they completely ignore everything that affects ground forces. Absolutely zero fear of action cards and bombardment (whoever heard of something silly like taking out tanks from the air!).

I think they actually increase the problem of making forces impossible to dislodge from planets. At least mass ground forces could be combatted with war sun bombardment, cards, and in extreme cases bacterial weapons. You can't do anything against mech units but bring more mech units (or build an inefficient number of carriers to carry crazy amounts of ground forces). They're also easier to produce since they only count as one against a dock's build limit, and they're BARELY less powerful than 4 ground forces for the same resource cost.

They also seem to completely marginalize races with abilities that affect ground forces, namely Sol and Yin (two races that already weren't terribly great).

What's everyone's opinion of them? Do they really add anything? Are the problems I'm seeing overblown? I'm thinking of just leaving them out of future games.
