Bidding for starting positions is a good way to remove unwanted randomness in competitive games in which players know how worthy each seat is. However, if I'm playing 4'er with not-so-hardcore players and still would want to somehow balance things a bit, would this be a good way to do it:

Seats 1 and 2 get an extra VP at start of game. Not from the VP pool, so the game length remains the same.

I think seat 1 is slightly favorable than 2, and 3 is better than 4, so in case of ties, don't use DB+goods to break them, and use player order instead:
2. beats 1. beats 4. beats 3.
