Actually, it has the opposite effect. Instead of glancing around the table when it matters, I have to commit all merchant actions to memory and then mentally review them when it might affect a decision I make. This is the exact reason Magic: The Gathering tournaments allow note-taking during a match.

While I agree with public vaults in principle, there are two cards where the interaction is questionable: the one that merchants from deck and the one that merchants from hand. Here it's not trackable hidden information (which I personally dislike) but actual hidden information. Worse, one is supposed to be hidden to all players while the other is supposed to be hidden to all but the player who has them. I think if I were playing with the public vaults houserule (which I endorse) I'd houserule them all to be secret as it's not a lot to ask a player to remember what he tucked.
